Freeman Clowery describes the Massey medal as “the first designed and struck in Canada, for the first native Canadian Governor General, the first non-titled incumbent, and the first shown without a chatelaine, (Mrs. Massey died a year and a half prior to his appointment to Rideau Hall).” Chief Engraver at the Royal Canadian Mint, Thomas Shingles, cut the dies for the Massey medal. A total of 2,018 examples were awarded in bronze. This Uncirculated example resides in its original case of issue.
