CA$975.00

Red enamelled cross on blue enamel bombayed in centre, with beaver atop; engraved on a ribbon at left, St. GEORGE’S; engraved on a ribbon above SOCIETY; engraved on a ribbon at right, TORONTO. A cut-out St. George slaying the dragon is suspended from bottom of medal. Rev. PRESENTED / TO / BENm / WALTON / PRESIDENT / 1878. ar. approx. 33x40mm.

Benjamin Walton was a builder in Toronto and also advertised slate roofs. Strangely, he does not appear in the 1879 Toronto directory, but is listed from 1868, presumably till 1878. A biography of him occurs in History of Toronto and County of York Ontario. Toronto, 1885. Walton was born in Yorkshire, England in 1819, and came to Toronto in 1844. He had had very good advantages for an education, which he diligently improved. In Toronto he worked as a journeyman until 1848 when he turned to the building business. His first work was the construction of the stone work for Osgoode Hall, and after laid the basement of King’s College. He afterwards erected the Mechanics’ Institute, afterwards the Toronto Public Library. Other accomplishments were the Bank of British North America, Custom House, Examining warehouses, etc. His large slate quarry was on five thousand five hundred acres of land purchased on the Grand Trunk Railway at Melbourne, Quebec. He died on the 3rd January, 1885.
