1759 Quebec Taken Medal in Silver. LR-864, Betts-421, Eimer-673. AU55 PCGS.
40mm. 27.5g. WILLIAM PITT ADMINISTRING on edge. One of several Canadian-related medals in the ever-popular Society of Performing Arts and Commerce (later the Royal Society of Arts) series commemorating the various British Victories during the Seven Years War. This one celebrates the taking of Quebec in 1759. That battle famously saw General James Wolfe killed on the Plains of Abraham as depicted in Benjamin West’s Death of General Wolfe, which hangs in the National Gallery. This example is evenly toned in steel-blue and pale golden patina. Light hairlines are insignificant. Although graded AU55 by PCGS, there is hardly a brush of friction on either side. A single tick appears on Britannia’s neck.
For a list of other SPAC medals with engraved edges, see Geoff Bell’s article in the June 2019 issue of the MCA Advisory. He documents 22 specimens in the entire series, although this one is not listed there.
Ex: Ex: Dr. Albert Ouellet via Doug Robbins, April 1984; John W. Adams Collection of French and Indian War Medals/FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2012), lot 3915; Costa Family Collection, Part I (Heritage, 8/2025), lot 3578.
