1872-H Canada 25 Cents With "H. WETTSTEIN" Counterstamp. Brunk W-438.

CA$45.00

Plated on the back cover of the 2003 Brunk price supplement. Hermann Wettstein of Harvard, Illinois is listed in the 1880 Illinois State Gazetteer as a dealing in and repairing jewelry, clocks, and watches. Wettstein’s mark is known on a variety of Canadian and American coins from the 1870s and earlier, suggesting he was probably producing these counterstamps about the late 1870s.

The countermark is impressed on the lower obverse and diagonally across the reverse of a Canadian 1872-H 25 cent piece in high-end Fine condition. Both sides are lightly toned in iridescent lavender, powder-blue, and mint-green hues.

Ex: Roy Van Ormer Collection (Bowers and Merena, 9/1985), lot 2909; Rich Hartzog.
