1910 Saint John New Brunswick Dominion Exhibition Gold Medal. Charlton-EDOA-36. Unc.

1,295.00

AU-10k. 39mm. 32.6 grams. AGW 0.4359. This is the gold medal awarded to Carrite-Patterson Manufacturing Company for their Amatite roofing paint at the 1910 Dominion of Canada Exhibition in Saint John, New Brunswick.

The obverse features a laurel sprig in the left field with the following inscription carefully engraved: AMATITE ROOFING MANUFACTURED BY THE CARRITTE-PATERSON MF’G CO. LTD. ST JOHN N.B. HALIFAX N.S. The legend above reads DOMINION EXHIBITION with St. John N.B. 1910 below in gothic font. The reverse shows the arms and motto of the city of Saint John (“O Fortunate the Cities Whose Ramparts are Being Built”) with the arms of the seven provinces and two territories around. Maker unknown. 10k is stamped on the lower rim with a hallmark beside it that appears to show a 3 within a C.

This important medal was last offered publicly more than 30 years ago. It is featured on page 33 of Charlton’s Canadian Exhibition, Fair, Carnival Medals, Volume I. Each side features rich yellow-gold colour and pinpoint definition without a trace of friction. There is a large cut mark below the 0 in 1910, visible in the images and another small rim nick at 6 o’clock on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and finely textured. Eye appeal is terrific.

Ex: Winter Torex / Sale #6 (Jeffrey Hoare Auctions, 2/1988), lot 261, where it brought $950. Original lot ticket included.
