1897 Montreal Star Victoria Jubilee Medal, Leroux-1875l, Gem Unc Prooflike, Original Box.

135.00

38mm. White metal. These medals were issued by the now-defunct Montreal Star newspaper and distributed to the schoolchildren of Montreal to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and promote their publication. The obverse shows a large bust of Queen Victoria with VICTORIA above, QUEEN AND EMPRESS below, and the dates 1837 / 1897 left and right. The reverse features the arms of Great Britain, CANADA above, and a circular legend that reads: TO COMMEMORATE THE SIXTIETH YEAR OF HER MAJESTY’S REIGN. Struck by S.H. Quint of Philadelphia, who included his mark on the lower reverse left and right of the date.

This example is in phenomenal condition. When seen, these medals usually show the kind of abuse expected of a trinket handed out to schoolchildren. They rarely retain their original ribbons, and the original boxes are even scarcer. Each side enjoys a stark white-on-black cameo effect and full detail.
